〈JAPANESE ANTIQUE Book Case MAINTENANCE WORK〉

Maintenance of antique Japanese bookcases and antique furniture

3 min

What we would like to introduce to you today is a Japanese bookcase made during the Taisho period.

It is a beloved piece of furniture that has been passed down through three generations of parents and children and is imbued with history and memories.

Although the furniture had been well cared for and maintained regularly, the paint had faded and there was damage in places due to aging. In particular, the bottom of the furniture was damaged by water during a typhoon, leaving the wood itself in a serious condition.

The entire surface has lost its oiliness and become dry and flaky due to aging.
The decorative panel on the top surface had curled up and the shelves had warped under the weight of the books, which in turn caused the double-door glass doors to not fit properly, so before servicing the entire cabinet, we removed the doors and glass and serviced and adjusted each part individually.

Remove the door and carefully remove the glass that is set in. It is a one-of-a-kind original piece made just for this piece of furniture.

It's easy to fix wood, but not glass.

Once it breaks, it will never go back together.

The glass industry made great strides from the late Meiji period to the early Taisho period, and it was during this period that commercialization of plate glass became possible domestically.

It is said that in the latter half of the Taisho period, with improvements in raw materials and the appearance of new decolorizing agents, it became possible to make colorless, transparent glass.

古家具がもつ時代を醸し出す雰囲気をそこなうことなく艶を調整し、最後は蜜蝋ワックスで仕上げます。

This is the bottom part, where the damage was the most serious. The left is before work, and the right is after maintenance. As you can see, the color and luster have been restored, and the grain of the wood is now clearly visible.
