今回ご紹介するのはオーク無垢材でできたダイニングテーブルの修理です。
オーク材特有のどっしりとした作りになっているテーブル。このタイプの家具は重量があるので天板の重みに耐えられず歪ができやすいのが特徴です。分厚い無垢板の４枚組天板を足と木枠のフレームで支える為使用年月がたつにつれジョイント部分が緩み、中板２枚が落ち込んでしまった状態でした。
--BEFORE An antique dining table used in a home. The tabletop, made of solid oak, has expanded and contracted repeatedly over the years, causing serious distortion.
This is a photo of the tabletop. You can see that it has sunk by about 3 mm.
In this state it would be difficult to use it as a desk properly.
ずれ落ちていた板を固定したのち、表面を紙やすりを使いサンディングでフラットにしていきます。
鉋をかけてやりたかったのですが、目の向きが揃っていないので、簡単にはできません。
時間をかけて丁寧にやすりをかけ続けます。
Lift up this sag from below, add more supports, and secure it firmly on the back. This will prevent the tabletop from falling down due to its own weight.
This adjustment required fine tuning to line up the surfaces as the back side is not machined flat.
If you have a solid wood countertop and are experiencing similar symptoms, try looking at the underside of the countertop.
If it is leveled, it is easy to adjust.
最後にワックスをすりこみ、磨きをかけて完成です。
リストリーではなるべくウレタン塗装ではなく気の呼吸を妨げないナチュラルなオイルフィニッシュか、フレンチポリッシュをお勧めしています。
天板のみの再塗装の場合 脚とのバランスがありますので、光沢の調整が非常に重要になります。
「こんな仕上がりになりますよ」と言ってもお客様からすれば、なかなか理解しずらいと思いますが。使い手にも、木にも双方に喜んでいただけるように最善を尽くしております。
Once the surface is prepared, it is colored with oil stain.
Oak wood has a naturally clear grain, but when you apply the oil stain, the grain becomes even more pronounced, and the moist finish creates a wonderful atmosphere.
Oil stain penetrates into the wood's vessels and hardens internally, making it more water-repellent and less likely to attract insects than an unpainted wood.
It is also popular for use in crafts and art furniture due to its ease of painting and beautiful finish.
--AFTER The surface rubbed with natural wax has a nice color and luster, and can maintain its beauty forever if properly cared for. If you create a tough coating like urethane paint, you won't be able to enjoy the natural beauty of this wood.
